No update on inmate murder
The ZO initially broke the story on Monday after receiving reports from a close source that inmates at the prison feared for their lives after witnessing the incident
THE Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has not responded to the ZO’s request for comment regarding details of an inmate allegedly beaten to death at the hands of correctional service officers at Qalakabusha Prison last week Wednesday.
The ZO initially broke the story on Monday after receiving reports from a close source that inmates at the prison feared for their lives after witnessing the incident.
This week the allegations, which involve a number of correctional service officers who were on duty that day, were put forward to the KZN DCS in an email for comment.
However, Empangeni Station Commander, Brigadier Jeros Thango, confirmed a case has been opened at the station and they are awaiting prison management to come forward with a statement.
‘As it stands, these are allegations and rumours; we have to wait for a statement from the prison before we can investigate the matter,’ he said.
It is alleged that one prison warden, who is believed to have been the head of Section 16, in which Ayanda Nasanda was beaten to death on Wednesday morning, is on the run.
