Play balloon tennis

Weekend boredom busters for the kids

Tired of watching your kids watching cartoons all weekend long?

Watch this space every week for some fresh ideas to keep them entertained – and spend some quality time with their mom!

Play balloon tennis

Balloon tennis is an excellent way to turn a rainy day into a fun day.

It’s a dual purpose activity: the making of the tennis ‘bats’ will keep the kids busy at least half an hour, and then you can spend the rest of the day – or until everyone is tired – playing balloon tennis!

To make the bats, you need paper plates and either plastic spoons, large craft sticks or even cheap plastic rulers. You also need masking tape, balloons and crayons.

Task you child to decorate his paper plate. Persuade him to draw something he really likes or an interesting pattern. Don’t rush this part – the idea is to kill time.

Once everybody’s paper plates are decorated, use masking tape to attach a ruler/spoon/craft stick onto the back of the plate.

Make sure it is fixed properly – this is going to be your racket with which you’re going to smack balloons, so you don’t want it to come loose in the middle of an overhead serve.

Blow up a balloon and you’re ready to go.

Balloon tennis has one simple rule: the balloon is not allowed to touch the ground.

There can be as many players as you like, and there is no age limit. If you have many players, divide them in teams, if you want.

Clear the room of dangerous obstacles or breakable items that you don’t want knocked over, like glasses and ornaments.

Let the games begin!

If you’re tired of smacking balloons, have an ‘egg’ race where everyone must run a distance while balancing the balloon on their rackets.

Come to think of it, balloons are really awesome boredom busters. Click on this link for 28 further ideas to have fun with balloons: https://handsonaswegrow.com/28-ways-to-play-with-balloons/
