THE Geographic Board still has to approve the name change of Melmoth to Mthonjaneni.
At a sitting of the Mthonjaneni Municipal Council on Thursday, 26 October it was agreed that a recommendation for the name change would be sent for approval.
Melmoth came into being in 1888 and was named after Osborn Melmoth, who was the British commissioner in Zululand and was stationed in eShowe.

Melmoth has been accused by the Zulu nation of having played a huge role in destroying the Zulu Kingdom.
Mayor Biyela said the new name was raised by the Mthonjaneni community and a referendum was
held with the majority choosing Mthonjaneni as the preferred name.
Mthonjaneni is the name of the spring used by King Shaka. The maidens used to fetch water
from the spring for King Dingane.
