Education head encourages uMlalazi circuit educators

Educators encouraged to stay focused despite difficulties in the classrooms

KZN Dept of Education King Cetshwayo District Director, David Chonco, was guest speaker at the uMlalazi Circuit Management Cluster (CMC) celebration of International Teachers’ Day on Friday at the eShowe High School.

In his address, Chonco raised some of the issues facing the department.

He said many of the problems arise from the ill-discipline of the learners, which can often be traced back lack of support in their homes.

Learners entering the schooling system often have no respect for their elders and this causes problems in the classroom.

Stabbings, abuse, bullying and just plain bad behaviour are some of the problems facing educators.

While educators are then accused of unfair conduct against the learners, it must also be understood that the educators are also under stress as they need to deal with ill-disciplined learners and teach.

Although not justified and restraint needs to be employed, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning in the classroom.

Community support

The filling of promotional posts is also becoming problematic as persons filling these posts are being intimidated by the communities surrounding the schools in support of their chosen candidate.

It has also come to the department’s notice that educators within schools are also supporting certain candidates when filling posts.

They are rising up against the post incumbents as they pursue their own agendas.

This is rubbing off onto all involved in education and the losers are the learners.

He praised those educators who are continuing to perform their duties despite these challenges.

The function was hosted by the uMlalazi Circuit Education Specialist, NE Nxumalo.

Musical items by the eShowe High School choir, learners from Velamuva High School and educators were presented at the formal session.

Messages of support were also delivered by NATU and SADTU as well as the sponsors of the event which was followed by sporting activities.
