End of an era for this iconic South African snack

Most South African children grew up on this sweet treat - but you won't find these in your Halloween basket for the first time since the eighties...

THE Cadbury’s Tempo Bar – a staple treat in many South African households since 1986 – is no more.

Though rumours began circulating that the new Cadbury 5 Star bar would be replacing an old favorite on the product list began persisting some time ago, an official statement has been released by the company confirming that no more Tempo bars would be sold.

Tempo was developed by Barry Fern and marketed by Lois Wagner in 1986 and was the most successful new product introduction into the snack market that decade. Tempos are no longer sold, and they have been rebranded and named 5 Star as of this year – Wikipedia

A dedicated Tempo fan since the eighties – Zululand old boy Paul Clark said on social media this week that the company had responded to his query about the apparent lack of availability of the Tempo with a statement confirming the demise of his favorite snack.

A spokesperson for Mondelez South Africa, distributors and importers of the chocolate bar, had the following to say:

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding availability of the Cadbury Tempo Bar.

Unfortunately, due to a Management decision, this product is no longer being manufactured or imported by Mondel?z South Africa and there are no plans to reintroduce this product, or an equivalent variant, in the near future. Your comments, however, have been forwarded to our marketing and production departments.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Have a good day further.

Kind Regards

Teresa White

Mondelez South Africa (Pty) Ltd

‘To be honest, the thought of never having one again is super depressing,’ said Clark.

‘I even offered to buy any old stock from storage, but they have nothing left. It’s gone,’ he said.

At the launch of the Cadbury’s 5 Star bar, a spokesman for Mondelez said that the new bar was designed and launched ‘while keeping in mind the ever-changing consumer palate’.

This is little comfort for many seventies babies, who will surely miss their childhood favourite – the good old Tempo.

Cadbury’s distributors are replacing the beloved Tempo bar with ‘new kid on the block’ – the Cadbury’s 5 Star bar
