Stephanie thriving in a ‘man’s world’

Had Stephanie du Plessis not won the Mobius Institute scholarship, she would not be where she is today

A FEW months after being the first South African and first woman to be awarded a full scholarship at the Mobius Institute, Stephanie du Plessis is once again on a high as she can make full use of the training material by putting theory into practice at her new job.

Now a vibration analyst technician at WearCheck, there is nothing to hinder Du Plessis as she progresses by leaps and bounds.

Having completed her level one studies, she is undertaking the practical elements and will write the exam in December.

She can then proceed to level two, which is also covered by her scholarship.

‘I am learning a lot and enjoying the challenges, and I can safely say that I am exactly where I wanted to be. I just got here a lot quicker than I thought I would.’

A fitter by trade, Du Plessis had her sights set on becoming a vibration analyst but, as with anything, studying came at a price.

After applying for a scholarship with Mobius Institute last year, she was surprised and thrilled when it was announced she had qualified.

This entitles her to study for categories I and II, write the exams and become qualified in those levels of vibration analysis.

Du Plessis recently started working at WearCheck, which provides condition monitoring services to its earth moving, industrial, transportation, marine, aircraft and power generation customers.

‘There is a real sense of family here, everyone helps each other.

‘I am learning a lot and able to apply my studies to my work. I started off taking oil samples from the water plants on which I am working, but I am now going to start conducting the analysis myself.’

Du Plessis is thrilled that she is being given more responsibilities in her job. She feels she is being taken seriously and is encouraged by this.

‘There is a level of respect and honour in team-members’ individual achievements. I could not have asked for a better first vibration analyst job.’
