Co-ops must re-invest says Zululand district mayor
He informed the community that a district economic development office is now available where information on how to run their businesses professionally can be obtained
ZULULAND District Mayor Mzamo Buthelezi says co-operatives who spend government project investments wisely will be rewarded.
Speaking at an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) roadshow at KwaDenge on Tuesday, during which equipment and materials were delivered to co-operatives from all 21 wards in the Nongoma Municipality, Buthelezi encouraged the 100 business groups involved to ensure that profits are not misused, but re-invested to expand their businesses into successful and sustainable enterprises.
He informed the community that a district economic development office is now available where information on how to run their businesses professionally can be obtained.
‘We have noted that in many cases various government departments invest a lot of money into businesses and projects to uplift communities, only to see these collapse because business owners or project managers misuse profits or allocations instead of re-investing it.
‘We want you to ensure that you invest in your businesses and projects to expand and keep them viable for the benefit of the communities. In the next financial year we will return to check on your progress and reward those who succeed,’ Buthelezi said.
Buthelezi also announced that contractors have been appointed to upgrade water projects at a cost of about R55-million.
‘The Mandlakazi facility, for example, providing three million litres of water per day, will be upgraded to supply 10 million litres per day.
‘We are also upgrading Osuthu to boost capacity to 14 million litres per day compared to the current three million litres.
He further announced the construction of about 100 toilet units for the community of Nongoma.
