Mine workers call off strike

The workers down the tools last Monday demanding long service awards they claim was owed them

STRIKING mine workers who staged an illegal underground sit-in of almost a week at Zululand Anthracite Colliery Cool Mine (ZAC) outside Ulundi, have finally emerged yesterday (Sunday) after successful negotiations.

The workers down the tools last Monday demanding long service awards they claim was owed them.

On Saturday afternoon a National Union of Mineworkers representative met with the employer for almost two hours.

Union branch secretary Msawenkosi Nkabinde said the mine ‘agreed to meet them halfway’.

Nkabinde, who acknowledged that members had undertaken an illegal strike, said the protest was called off once the union reported back to the workers and agreement was reached.

The company provided transport to take the strikers home as they have been there underground for almost seven days.
