Cricket wrap-up in the area

The league will run for seven weeks, with finals scheduled for 2 December

THE uMhlathuze XI cricket team did not have a great season in the 2017/2018 Weber Cup competition, only winning one of their four games played.

The side, captained by Owen Govender, ended fourth on the log with only three points in the bag.

Richards Bay successfully defended their title, after ending at the top of the log with six points.

But second placed eShowe who won three and lost one game also ended on six points.

But due to the mere fact that Richards Bay beat eShowe in a one-on-one fixture, they get the title for this season.

The popular annual 45-over league was competed over four weeks, between Richards Bay, eShowe, Empangeni Cricket Club, uMhlathuze XI and Felixton XI.

The format of the competition was simple, play a round robin and the team at the top of the log wins the competition.

The uMhlathuze XI will now split up and players will join Brackenham, Richards Bay Cricket Club or uMfolozi for the T20 league, which got underway on Saturday, 14 October.

The league will be competed by Empangeni Cricket Club, uMfolozi, Brackenham, Richards Bay, Felixton, eShowe and eSikhawini.

The league will run for seven weeks, with finals scheduled for 2 December.

Players will then break for the Christmas period before competing in the Saturday 24-Over League early next year.

Teams will compete in one round, following a round robin format, with the top two sides automatically qualifying for the finals.

All games are scheduled to get underway from 1pm.
