Community complains about unsafe footbridge

THE R8-million uMfule River footbridge which joins the Ncane and Qunebe areas, is posing a danger to the community as it has no barriers

THE R8-million uMfule River footbridge which joins the Ncane and Qunebe areas, is posing a danger to the community as it has no barriers.

The barriers have been removed and only a few are left.

One of the residents living near the footbridge, Xolani Buthelezi, believes it is only matter of time before someone is injured.

He said a contractor arrived to fix the damaged barriers earlier this year, but soon left.

‘The barrier pillars were not properly attached to the bridge and only small screws were used to attach it.’

Mthonjaneni Mayor Sibongiseni Biyela said the municipality is experiencing challenges in ascertaining problems in all the wards integrated into their municipality from Ntambanana.

‘I don’t have any idea about the location of the bridge and I don’t know who is responsible for its maintenance. I will have to look into the matter to determine which government department is responsible.’
