Education MEC promises birthday gift fit for a King
Addressing school principals from the uMkhanyakude and King Cetshwayo districts at the Umfolozi TVET College last week, Dlungwana said no gift would be more appropriate for the King’s birthday than an 80% matric pass rate
KZN MEC for Education, Mthandeni Dlungwana, has vowed to do everything possible to make King Goodwill Zwelitihini’s 70th birthday a memorable one.
Addressing school principals from the uMkhanyakude and King Cetshwayo districts at the Umfolozi TVET College last week, Dlungwana said no gift would be more appropriate for the King’s birthday than an 80% matric pass rate.
‘As a province we committed ourselves to achieving a matric pass rate of at least 76% this year, but realising that the King will be celebrating his 70th birthday next year, we should push for an 80% pass rate.’
As KZN we are ready to deliver the good results and these two districts have the potential to do well, but they must improve on maths and science.
‘We can’t afford to disappoint you Hlangalezwe as our patron, Dlungwana told Zwelithini. ‘Your leadership and your passion to education continue to inspire us.’
These sentiments were echoed by the Education Department’s HOD, Dr Vusi Nzama, who said despite 2017 being a difficult year, they would not disappoint the King.
‘We have been working tirelessly to improve learner performance. We have prepared our learners well and remain optimistic that we will reap the fruits of our hard work.’
With only a few weeks left before the commencement of the matric examinations, Nzama insisted there will be focused monitoring of each school, circuit, district and even provincial exam offices to ensure smooth operations.
‘In terms of the state of readiness, it’s all systems go. When the matric results are released on 4 January, we want to be among those who will be jubilant,’ he said.
