Stars of the 2017 Kinsey Report

SINCE 1990 a man called Malcolm Kinsey has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes in the SA motor industry.
He researches which cars are the cheapest to own by making up a ‘parts basket’ for each vehicle.
The latest Kinsey Report reflects the rough weather SA’s motor trade is currently experiencing, and with some brands having abandoned the local market, the 2017 report was reduced to 72 vehicles.
As before, there are nine categories with Kinsey choosing relevant vehicles ‘with reasonable to good sales figures volumes’ in each.
The report splits car parts into three sub-sections: service, repair and crash.
Average dealer prices for these three are then combined to create an overall basket price, with each vehicle ranked against its competitors on this figure.
In the 2017 Kinsey Report, Toyota shined with four class victories, the Hilux winning the very important double cab bakkie category.
Below are the top three vehicles in each of the nine categories.
