Weather proves no deterrent for birders
Birdlife Zululand's monthly meeting will be open to anyone wanting to participate in their Bird Quiz Time
DESPITE wet and cold weather conditions, BirdLife Zululand’s recent expedition to uMhlathuze River proved fruitful, with members managing to tick off 53 species.
The weather conditions on the day may have led to the outing being cut short to just two-and-a-half hours, but the species count did end up being more than that of the reconnaissance outing the week before.
The species recorded on the day included the amethyst sunbird, white-fronted bee eaters which were nesting on the river bank, little egret, brown snake eagle, African pipit, red-faced mouse bird, wood hoopoe and the elusive bald ibis.

BirdLife Zululand meets monthly and a ‘Bird quiz time’ event, open to anyone who would like to join, will be held tonight (Monday) at the uMhlathuze Municipality Civic Centre’s auditorium (6.30pm). Entry is free.
‘The committee’s bright birders have put together a selection of challenging bird questions, so put on your thinking caps and come and have some fun,’ said BirdLife Zululand Chairperson, Carole Hills.
Various prizes are up for grabs and people are urged to bring along a friend who is interested in getting into birding.
‘We especially want to see more young people getting involved,’ said Hills.
The November club meeting is set for the 18th at the same venue and same time.
