MY STORY: ‘Backyard circumcision ruined my life’
'I fear my marriage will end soon - and I won’t blame my wife for leaving me...'
A DISTRAUGHT father of two has revealed how a ‘backyard’ circumcision ruined his life – and destroyed his marriage.
After talking to his friend about circumcision in 2015, a local 43-year-old store vendor ‘Jabulani’ (not his real name), decided it was appropriate to undergo the procedure after discussing it with his wife, who was fully supportive.
But what followed was a nightmare.
‘My wife encouraged me to have the procedure done because of the health benefits,’ he said. We heard about a traditional ‘doctor’ who deals with these procedures in the African way and made an appointment.’
‘Jabulani’ says the man, who operates in eSikhaleni, appeared to be professional and he paid R200 for the procedure.
‘Immediately afterwards everything appeared to be fine and I couldn’t wait for the six-week abstinence period to end so that I could be with my wife again ,’
But weeks after the procedure, ‘Jabulani’ began experiencing severe discomfort and turned to traditional medicine to ease the pain.
