Abandoned newborn baby is in a stable condition

A case of attempted murder has been opened

THE KZN Department of Health says the newborn baby found abandoned in a pit toilet in eNseleni last week, is recovering at the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Hospital (LUWMH).

‘She is in a stable condition and is receiving medical attention to eliminate any health risks she might have been exposed to,’ said KZN DOH spokesperson Sam Mkhwanazi.

‘A social worker is in the process of finding a suitable home for her. The department is unable to comment further as this matter is subject to a police investigation,’

On Tuesday morning the baby girl, believed to be less than a day old, was discovered by members of Empangeni SAPS Search and Rescue team after a member of the public informed police about a baby’s cries coming from the pit toilet near Myeni’s Cottages.

She was found alive and rushed to the Enseleni clinic for urgent medical attention.

According to tenants the baby’s cries were heard since midnight.

A case of attempted murder has been opened.

The mother of the child is still at large and police are urging anyone with knowledge of her whereabouts to contact the Empangeni police on 035 9018533 or 0800 10111.
