Two out of three for King Cetshwayo

Their 2017/2018 season started off on the wrong foot when going down by 4 wickets to Clare's Cricket Club on Sunday morning at Addison Park

RH CONSTRUCTION King Cetshwayo’s cricket squad recorded two wins over the long weekend in the Castle Premier League T20 competition.

Their 2017/2018 season started off on the wrong foot when going down by 4 wickets to Clare’s Cricket Club on Sunday morning at Addison Park.

The game was a low scoring affair owing to wet conditions, which resulted in the overs being reduced to 17.

The home side kitted up first and posted 84 runs.

Neill Jordan (28), Daryl Hattingh (13) and Simon Savides (11) were the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Although a low total to chase down, it was tough going for the Durban club but they managed to cross the line at 85/6 in the 15th over.

Ruan Janse van Rensburg (2/25 in 4.5) and Van der Merwe (1/1 in 1) were the pick of the home team’s bowling attack.

Bouncing back

A break between games and a review of the morning’s performance saw the local team bouncing back with a 6-wicket victory over DHS Rhythm in the afternoon game.

The Durban outfit batted first and were dismissed in the 19th over for 87 runs.

Bruce Tembo (3/18 in 4), Jordan (2/15 in 4), Van der Merwe (2/10 in 4) and Janse van Rensburg (2/15 in 4) were all rewarded for bowling a good line.

King Cetshwayo reached 89 for the loss of 4 wickets in the 17th over, thanks to contributions from captain Eugene Zwart (34), Josh Rencken (18) and Janse van Rensburg (18 not out).

On the road

The squad then travelled down to Durban on Monday afternoon to take on Topham Cricket Club at the Chatsworth Oval.

Compared to the double-header played the day before, this contest was a decent high scoring affair.

The home side padded up first, recording 151/5 in 20 overs.

Simon Savides opened the batting and managed 11 before being caught by Jason Wagner off the bowling of Yergesh Naidoo

Left arm orthodox spinner Stephan Joubert was the pick of the bowling attack with 2/29 in 4, and was well supported by Janse van Rensburg (1/30 in 4), Jordan (1/33 in 4) and Chad Neuhoff (1/13 in 2).

But after both openers were dismissed for zero (Zwart and Savides), another loss looked to be on the cards.

Joubert (30) and Janse van Rensburg (39) steadied the ship before Van der Merwe came in and dominated proceedings, ending unbeaten on 61 to get his side over the line.
