Mduduzi aims to go professional

The grade 12 pupil at Mevamhlophe High School currently represents the national team, but aims at turning professional and competing in the 2020 Olympic Games

LOCAL amateur boxer Mduduzi ‘Sgora’ Mzimela (21) only weighs in at 52 kg’s but packs a mega punch, as the talented fighter has won more than 50 medals and trophies since taking up the sport in 2011.

The grade 12 pupil at Mevamhlophe High School currently represents the national team, but aims at turning professional and competing in the 2020 Olympic Games.

‘This year I decided to focus mainly on my grades as I am in my final year of schooling and need to do well. So boxing has taken a back seat for now, but next year I am going to commit fully to making progress within my desired career.

‘Boxing has allowed me to travel our beautiful country, as my fifty plus fights have seen me fight in various places in the Eastern Cape and Durban.’

Despite focusing on his studies, Sgora is unbeaten this year, having won three out of three bouts.

Sgora is currently training hard to maintain his form and shape, under trainer and founder of 3 Seconds Boxing Club, Dr 3 Seconds.

‘My coach has played a major role in my career thus far and our relationship is solid, which has contributed to my success.

‘He is a very clever and tactical trainer, as he studies my opponents and tells me what to expect in the ring and prepares me differently to suit each fight.’

Dr 3 Seconds said Sgora is a very talented boxer and has a bright future.

‘When I look at Sgora I see a World Champion, so I do not see any reason to waste time,’ said Dr 3 Seconds.

‘He has proven his skills on an amateur level and therefore we aim at turning him into a professional boxer next year.’

Dr 3 Seconds is currently organising a boxing tournament to take in Empangeni on 7 October, which will see all local boxers putting up their mitts as they seek victory.
