Slade murder investigation begins

Slade shot and killed Siyabonga Nsele (26) in March this year after he was caught stealing groceries from Slade’s home

INVESTIGATIONS into the alleged murder committed by controversial former Sodwana Bay guest house owner Andre Slade, will begin today (Thursday).

Slade shot and killed Siyabonga Nsele (26) in March this year after he was caught stealing groceries from Slade’s home.

The ZO received information on Wednesday morning that forensic investigators will attempt to reconstruct the scene at Slade’s home.

Earlier this year Slade told the ZO he appeared in the Umbombo Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder after the incident, but according to him the case was thrown out of court as the magistrate ruled that he had acted in self-defence.

Following his interview with the ZO, the Sunday Times reported that Slade said he shot Nsele in the head as he was running away, and he collapsed ‘like a bag of potatoes’.

Slade was further quoted as saying he did not feel sorry for what he had done‚ arguing that the Bible allowed for burglars to be killed if they break into a home at night.

Despite his references to the Bible, Slade emphasised he did not belong to any religion.

MEC unimpressed

Following the reports of the murder, KZN Community Safety MEC Mxolisi Kaunda ordered department officials to liaise with investigators.

The MEC noted his concerns about the pace of the investigation.

He directed the management of Community Safety in the uMkhanyakude district to look into the matter and engage with the police.

Slade is not phased in the least by the investigation.

Speaking to the ZO yesterday (Wednesday), Slade said ‘whichever way it (investigation) goes, it must go’.

‘They said I am allowed to have an attorney present during their reconstruction of the scene. I don’t have an attorney.

‘Since that incident the crime rate in the area has dropped by 80 to 90%. We’ve even spoken to the police about this.

‘They are targeting us now, trying to make an example of us, but they don’t realise what we’re sitting with,’ he said, not elaborating any further.

Responding to the question how he would feel if he was found guilty of murder, he simply said: ‘Oh well… what is the sentence for murder?’

Slade (54) made headlines last year when he sent out an email barring blacks and government officials from his guest house.

He faces charges of hate speech and will appear in the Umbombo Magistrate’s Court for trial from 21 to 24 November.
