Emotional wellness creates balance

In response to the suicide reports in the Zululand Observer, LifeLine Zululand appeals to the community to utilise the services available to them

NOBODY should have to face challenging situations alone – a caring and compassionate approach can go a long way in changing a life.

This according to LifeLine Zululand Director, Bethel Jewlal, who says that their suicide prevention seminar in September will highlight the need for psychosocial support and emotional wellness as a prevention strategy relating to suicide.

‘While LifeLine’s 24/7 crisis support and intervention services provide a safety net for all, we encourage individuals, couples and families to embrace their emotional wellness and take that brave step to improve their situation,’ she said.

What is ‘emotional wellness’?

Jewlal says there are various versions of the definition.

‘At LifeLine it basically denotes creating a balance in one’s life. Physical, spiritual, emotional and the mental self must be congruent with each other.

‘Emotional wellness impacts many different aspects of one’s daily life. For example, if you are having a bad day, your behaviour and actions communicate this to the people around you, and influences the manner in which you interact with others.’

She says the impact of an emotionally unstable person has far reaching negative consequences on families, individuals and the community at large.

‘The high number of social ills can also be attributed to the lack of emotional wellness in individuals.

‘People with high emotional awareness who recognise their own emotional state – and that of others – can use their understanding to increase and strengthen relationships. By doing so they can achieve greater success at work, home and school,’ she says.

LifeLine Zululand has been offering its services free of charge for more than 30 years.

In this light, they are giving back to the community by hosting a free seminar on Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September.
