Needy children receive new uniforms
The children's new uniforms were sewn by a local Pongola business woman and dressmaker
MORE than 100 rural Pongola school children can now attend classes without fear of being ridiculed for having no school uniform, thanks to the community upliftment efforts of Transnet Port Terminals (TPT).
Earlier this month, 165 learners at Buhlebuzile Primary School in the Lubisi area of Pongola received brand new school uniforms, and the school underwent a facelift, courtesy of TPT’s supplier development programme.
The programme ensures TPT contractors contribute a percentage of their contract value towards uplifting small businesses in the rural areas surrounding the areas in which the company operates.
After hosting last month’s TPT handover of a wire manufacturing machine to youth-owned co-operative Simbamisane, Buhlebuzile Primary itself received some minor renovations, including fresh coats of paint both inside and out, a new classroom block and new classroom doors.
Suppliers in TPT’s Richards Bay terminal that contributed to this initiative were Inkwelo Scaffolding Services, PREBCO Automotive Industrial Supplies, Kalmar Industries South Africa and Lazair Empangeni cc.
Symzah SA, a Pongola-based construction company, was tasked with the renovation of Buhlebuzile Primary School and local dressmaker and business woman, Busisiwe Mlambo, sewed the learners’ uniforms.
TPT’s newly appointed Chief Executive, Nozipho Sithole, attended the event and was given a tour of the school and its latest improvements.
‘Today’s event is not only to contribute to a brighter future for the learners of Buhlebuzile Primary School, but also to encourage the community to identify their talents and open businesses based on those talents, preparing them to supply products and services to huge companies such as Transnet Port Terminals.’
