Jozini water treatment works launched
Part of the Jozini Bulk Water Supply Project, the 40 million litres per day treatment works will provide about 135 000 people (approximately 16 200 households) with sustainable potable water supply
‘WE can live without electricity, but we can’t live without water.’
This was according to Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Monkonyane, at the opening of the Jozini regional water treatment works on Saturday.
Part of the Jozini Bulk Water Supply Project, the 40 million litres per day treatment works will provide about 135 000 people (approximately 16 200 households) with sustainable potable water supply.
Mhlathuze Water was appointed by the Department of Water and Sanitation as the implementing agent for the bulk water supply project.
To date, a total of R1.075-billion has been injected to develop the bulk water infrastructure.
Other project components include 145km of large diameter steel pipes to supply water through 15 storage reservoirs within the footprint of the project.
Since the inception of the Jozini Dam in 1955, this is one of the largest projects implemented in the uMkhanyakude District.
In addition, the project has created 920 local job opportunities.
The uMkhanyakude District is responsible for providing water and sanitation services to all local municipalities under its jurisdiction – uMhlabuyalingana, Jozini, The Big Five False Bay, Hlabisa and Mtubatuba.
