Notorious hijacker back in prison

Magubane was on Monday denied bail at the Empangeni Regional Court before Correctional Services escorted him back to Qalakabusha prison where he will serve the remainder of his sentence until 2026

BONGANI Magubane (38) is back behind bars after he revoked his parole by committing a number of hijackings in the region between 2016 and this year.

Magubane was on Monday denied bail at the Empangeni Regional Court before Correctional Services escorted him back to Qalakabusha prison where he will serve the remainder of his sentence until 2026.

In December 2004, Magubane was convicted of robbery with aggravated circumstances and sentenced to imprisonment. He was released on parole in December 2015.

He was rearrested in July this year after police linked him to a series of hijacking cases, but received bail and was released.

On 7 August, Magubane was once again arrested after he committed yet another hijacking – and this time police made sure he would not receive bail.

According to reports, Magubane is said to have targeted state owned vehicles and his most recent hijacking was that of an ambulance vehicle near Enseleni.

He was linked to two other cases via fingerprint identification and via possession in another case.

Police told the ZO Magubane had sold a vehicle to a man in Nkandla, who was arrested on charges of a stolen vehicle.

Upon questioning the man told police he had purchased the vehicle from Magubane.

King Cetshwayo Cluster Communications Officer, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, told the ZO Magubane is an example of renewed police effort.

‘As you would recall from previous statements over the past weeks, we have implemented certain operations and task teams to deal with carjacking in the area.

‘We are going to make sure such suspects are denied bail by ensuring that our members go to court to testify and strengthen our case so these suspects remain behind bars,’ Mdlalose said.
