Meerensee’s muddy water investigated
The City of uMhlathuze water department is reportedly investigating the matter
MEERENSEE residents have in recent weeks experienced intermittent bouts of poor quality tap water, from slightly murky on ‘good’ days to dark brown on bad days, prompting the City of uMhlathuze water department to launch an investigation into the issue.
While there are numerous theories as to the cause of the poor quality tap water, which has affected a variety of streets in Meerensee at different times, the City of uMhlathuze is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
After receiving numerous complaints from residents, Ward Councillor Christo Botha said muddy water appears to enter the system when repairs to burst pipes are undertaken.
‘It appears that during repair processes the system is thereafter not properly scoured,’ said Botha.
‘One can expect that while repairing the pipes, which are sometimes up to two meters underground, mud and debris will enter the system, but repair teams must ensure that pipelines are properly flushed to ensure clean water reaches households and that the system is free from debris and muddy water.
‘Water quality can never be compromised and residents cannot be exposed to any form of risk when the quality of water does not meet industry standards.’
The City of uMhlathuze was contacted for comment, but at the time of going to print no response was received.
