MY STORY: ‘Miscarriages a curse and punishment from the ancestors’

She married her husband in secret and now can’t have children

AFTER suffering three miscarriages, a young Zululand wife believes her tragic loss was punishment from the ancestors for getting married in secret.

When 31-year-old Princess (not her real name) met her husband seven years ago, she immediately knew he was the one.

Three years later she was ready to say ‘I do’, but the process of getting married caused major conflict within her family.

‘While preparing for the traditional ceremonies leading up to the wedding, what was supposed to be a joyous period in my life became a stressful time,’ she said.

‘My father is a Zulu man who never married my mother, but insisted on conducting everything according to his tradition.

‘My mother passed away years ago. She was not South African and her brothers wanted me to conduct everything their way.

‘I belong to both families, which meant they both had to find common ground, but the process turned into a battle of cultures.

‘They fought like cats and dogs and I had to make a decision to put myself and my happiness first. I than married my fiancé without telling a soul.’

Princess was 30-years-old when she decided to build a life with her husband, but what followed was a series of agonising losses.
