Zululand female principals honoured

Speaking at the event, King Cetshwayo District Education Director David Chonco encouraged women to take up leadership positions and not be afraid to rise to the occasion

To celebrate Women’s Day/Month, female principals in the Department of Education’s iMfolozi Circuit Management Centre were honoured at a special lunch at Meerensee’s Indaba Lodge.

The event was organised by Women In and Into Management (WIIM) and its aim was to recognise the contribution and leadership provided by women in schools.

Speaking at the event, King Cetshwayo District Education Director David Chonco encouraged women to take up leadership positions and not be afraid to rise to the occasion.

‘The biggest challenge you have is that you are in a space where you have to prove you can lead.

‘We are opening doors as the Department of Education and are giving you a space to lead.

Chonco also called on women to stand together and support each other.

‘The fact that you are a principal, circuit manager or director is not by mistake. You are capable of leading,’ he said.

Delivering a message of support on behalf of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union Richards Bay branch, Celukuthula Sithole applauded the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of women in the sector.

However, she also encouraged more deployment of women at higher level positions in the system.

‘We acknowledge the 51% representation at school management and leadership level but we will be monitoring the process of deployment because we wish to see more equality,’ she said.
