A MAN has been detained for questioning in connection with a brazen robbery on board a ship in port on Wednesday.
It was reported that a fair-skinned man had boarded the Philippine-registered ‘Captain Mike’, berthed at 801 in the harbour, and proceeded at gunpoint to relieve the ship of a substantial amount in US dollars.
He had apparently boarded the bulk carrier legitimately but under a false name.
The man then fled in an unmarked vehicle without registration plates and the car’s exit from the port was reportedly captured on security cameras.
A possible suspect was taken into custody on Thursday evening and is expected to appear in court today (Monday).
Richards Bay police are handling the investigation.
The vessel has since departed the Port of Richards Bay.
