Injured sailor airlifted to hospital in Richards Bay
NSRI Richards Bay pulled off a successful rescue on Saturday
ON Saturday afternoon NSRI Richards Bay and the NSRI ASR (Air Sea Rescue) were alerted by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following reports of a seaman suffering a lower back injury which required evacuation.
The sailor works on the gas carrier MV PGC Strident Force, sailing from the Suez Canal to Richards Bay, and he was injured when the vessel was approximately 4 nautical miles south-west of Richards Bay.
According to the NSRI the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) helicopter was tasked to carry out the operation and NSRI Richards Bay were placed on alert.

‘The helicopter, with the TNPA flight crew consisting of pilot Iefan Blake, co-pilot Lourens Goosen, hoist operator Le Roux Janse van Vuuren, accompanied by a Meditrax rescue paramedic Richard Schouten and NSRI ASR rescue swimmer Kim Germishuys, rendezvoused with the ship.
‘The paramedic and rescue swimmer were hoisted from the helicopter onto the ship’s deck.
‘The casualty, a 47-year-old Filipino male, was assessed and stabilised by the paramedic and then hoisted into the helicopter. and airlifted to hospital.
‘The operation took approximately two hours,’ said the NSRI.
