Tree roots cause havoc with household water supply

Water was restored to affected households in the early hours of Tuesday morning

A BURST water pipe in Meerensee rendered parts of Krewelkring road impassable for most of Monday, including the evening, owing to what appeared to be a Fever tree’s strong root system.

Cllr Christo Botha, City of uMhlathuze Ward 5 reported the burst pipe to the municipality at about midday and said municipal workers arrived on scene very shortly thereafter.

They continued to work throughout the afternoon, felling the offending tree and digging to locate the burst pipe, but could not finish the massive undertaking before night fell.

The tree was felled and the water pipe repaired, but the road was closed until early Tuesday morning

‘Fever trees are beautiful but their roots really do cause a lot of damage. In Empangeni, if you drive along Moberley Road, you would think you’re going over speed bumps the way the roots have damaged the road – also on the corner of Louis Botha and Paul Ave,’ said ZO reader Ruby Louisa Swanepoel.

The section of Krewelkring in the vicinity of Grunter Gully was closed until the job was complete, and the road was opened by 7.30am on Tuesday.

Water was restored to affected households in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
