‘Star’ hairdresser in Richards Bay

Stylist Jacques Gerber (45) has worked in the film, soapie and salon industry and on the sets of several blockbuster movies, including Stander, Hotel Rwanda, Beyond Borders and Racing Stripes

HE’S styled Angelina Jolie, Nick Nolte, Jacquin Phoenix – and if you’re having your hair cut in Richards Bay he may just be styling you, too.

Stylist Jacques Gerber (45) has worked in the film, soapie and salon industry and on the sets of several blockbuster movies, including Stander, Hotel Rwanda, Beyond Borders and Racing Stripes.

The adventurous stylist moved to Richards Bay from Klerksdorp at the age of three and attended Arboretum Primary and Richards Bay High School.

After school, Jacques went to study drama at the University of Pretoria and completed his BA Drama degree.

‘In my third year at varsity I cut my friend’s hair as a joke. He came back a few months later and asked me to cut it again. So I said yes for R10. After that the word spread and I started cutting my friends’ hair for drinking money.’

After graduating with his drama degree, Jacques decided to explore his talent by enrolling with Carlton Hair.

He completed a three-year apprenticeship there, while doing freelance acting.

‘Acting in South Africa does not pay very well, so I combined my drama degree with my hair knowledge and got into cutting hair in the filming industry.’

In between films, Jacques would work for a number of different hair salons and studied personal training and tourism for six months.

After five years in the film industry, the popular Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan head-hunted him to join their hair and make-up department.

During his six years on their team, he also played a small part, appearing in one episode, acting as a psychiatrist for a session with Emma.

‘I really was hoping to get more into 7de Laan on the acting side, but it did not work out for me.’

After that he worked with The Wild cast on MNet before opening his own salon at Hartebeesport Dam.

‘I love to constantly re-invent myself and challenge myself to do and accomplish certain things.

‘Life is short and one needs to live it to the full while experiencing as much as you can.’

His brother phoned him up at the beginning of this year and asked him to house sit for him in Richards Bay.

‘Fortunately I packed a pair of scissors, and while here I approached Hairstreaks Hair Design and the rest is history.’

Jacques shares the latest hair trends for 2017:
