Local cast excel on a Durban stage

Zululand cast entertained a full packed audience in Durban on Friday night

ZULU history came alive when the Zululand cast of a new stage production, The Rise of Shaka Zulu, took centre stage at the Transnet Port Manager’s Awards function at the Southern Sun Hotel Elangeni in Durban on Friday night.

Leading performers Mbalenhle Mathe (Mkabayi), Ben Thusi (Shaka Zulu) and Thandi Mbokazi (Queen Nandi)

 

Award winning taxi driver, Dlozi Nene, excelled on stage as clan leader

Written and produced by Zululand Observer journalist Wellington Makwakwa and directed by playwright Siyabonga Sikhakhane, the play told the story of King Shaka and how he came to the Zulu clan to usurp power from his half brothers.

Showcasing their talents are Bayanda Mkhize, Amahle Mthembu and Likhona ‘Barba’ Gonya as young Shaka

They cast received a standing ovation.

Portraying roles of two Zulu brother Dingaan and Mhlangana are Zululand actors Nhlanhla Nsele and Sya Gumede

The production is part of the Shaka series, with include the popular Death of the Emperor Shaka production which also falls under the King Cetshwayo Theatrical Society.
