New Big Five MTB track gets thumbs up

A total of 131 riders completed the 50km route, while the 25km race saw 188 riders cross the finish line

THE second leg of the Bell Big 5 MTB Series, the Steel Plate Solutions Leopard Chase on Sunday, saw a much lower number of riders completing the race compared to previous years.

A total of 131 riders completed the 50km route, while the 25km race saw 188 riders cross the finish line.

Three youngsters took the top three places in the 25km race. Matthew Opperman (youth) finished in 1:13:43, while Frances Janse van Rensburg (youth) and Chloe Bateson (sub-junior) finished second and third in times of 1:13:44 and 1:13:44 respectively.

In the 50km women’s race, Desiree Verwey, who finished first, and Hayley Smith (second) swapped places after Smith on in Mtunzini a month ago.

The Bell Big 5 Series action continues in two weeks’ time with the Buildit Kwambo Lion on Sunday, 16 July.
