TWO ballet groups from To The Pointe Dance School in Richards Bay recently performed out of their shoes to win their respective age categories at the Kyknet Dans In Jou Taal competition held at Heuwelland Primary School.

The popular Afrikaans television channel has been travelling the country recording a new series that will air in August.

Eight local dance schools attended the Empangeni recording that will be included in the series, which saw the two groups win in the 5-8 and 9-11 year old categories.

This victory has cemented their spot in the overall finals which will be competed on Saturday 26 August in Johannesburg.

Ballet dancers (back) Skye du Pisani, Erin Laas, Jamie de Beer, Karlin van Wyk, Delzey van Rooyen; (front) Sienna Brown, Elsoné Joubert, Lilly Verreyne and Tehya Trezise won the 5-8 year old division

The overall winner there will receive R150 000 prize money.

These group of girls train twice a week for an hour at a session and incorporate ribbons, feathers and crowns in their act.

‘I told the girls that we were not going to the competition to win, but to have fun and enjoy themselves,’ said Royal Academy of Dance registered teacher Gretchen Smit.

‘I am super proud of them for winning and we are really excited and going to work hard in the weeks ahead leading into the finals.’
