UPDATE: Mass cat sterilisation project a huge success
The entire feline population on the Tongaat Hulett Amatikulu Mill site was sterilised and re-released in one weekend
IN a joint operation between Project Zulu Cat and Tongaat Hulett Amatikulu Mill, a staggering 86 feral cats living on the mill’s property were recently trapped, sterilised and re-released en masse.
‘The decision to sterilise the cats was made because, as much as the cats are needed for vermin control, they have been multiplying at a rapid rate,’ said Tongaat Hulett Occupational Health Sister, Llaurin Bishop, who is also the Project Coordinator.
All 86 felines were trapped, sterilised, inoculated, ear tipped – for identification purposes – and re-released on the property.

Falling under the company’s corporate social investment, Tongaat Hulett sponsored the project, which saw Project Zulu Cat arranging the services of veterinarians Dr Taryn Bright and Dr Michael Joubert from Johannesburg.
‘The project was a success and we sincerely thank everybody involved, including employees, volunteers who assisted in trapping and releasing, the veterinarians for their services and use of their holding cages, Bay Hydraulics for helping out with transportation, Mtunzini Forest Lodge for sponsoring the veterinarians’ accommodation and Llaurin Bishop for organising the event with passion and commitment in helping the cats,’ said Project Zulu Cat Co-founder Heilke Ackerman.
