UPDATE: Suspected drug traffickers in custody

The trio will re-appear at eManguzi Magistrate's Court tomorrow (Thursday)

THE three suspects, who were arrested in connection with last week’s R104-million heroin bust at the Kosi Bay Port of Entry, have made their first appearance at eManguzi Magistrate’s Court.

The trio was remanded in custody and will re-appear tomorrow (Thursday).

A joint operation undertaken last week by Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit with Empangeni and Pretoria Crime Intelligence Officers resulted in the major drug bust.

After Pretoria crime intelligence members had gathered intelligence of the large haul set to be brought into South Africa from Mozambique, the Kosi Bay task team was activated and the described vehicle with its occupants was stopped and escorted to a nearby police station to undergo a thorough search.

‘Several bags of drugs allegedly fetched from Mozambique were found in a makeshift compartment underneath the vehicle,’ said Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS) Lt-Col Robert Netshiunda.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and his two accomplices were later arrested in Gauteng, with R50 000 in their possession.

After briefly appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, they were transferred to eManguzi.
