Richards Bay crew rescues Durban couple stranded at sea
A storm interrupted their voyage from Durban to Mayotte
A COUPLE sailing from Durban to Mayotte, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique, was rescued today (Sunday) by the Richards Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) team after their yacht suffered sail damage in a storm on Thursday night.
The duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority early this morning to assist the 38 foot yacht ‘Zazu’ after it was hit by wind speeds in excess of 50 knots.
‘They also suffered motor mechanical problems and contacted Telkom Maritime Radio Services for assistance reporting to be heading towards Richards Bay,’ said NSRI in a statement.
‘NSRI Richards Bay launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Round Table II and rendezvoused with the yacht three nautical miles off the Port of Richards Bay.
‘The yacht was towed into the port without incident and safely moored.
‘No further assistance was required.
‘The couple will make repairs to their yacht before continuing on their voyage.’
