Labour Department clamps down on UIF contributions

ZULULAND businesses last week came under the provincial Department of Labour’s spotlight, whose employer auditors undertook unannounced door-to-door visits to ensure companies subscribe to the department’s rules and regulations.

Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contributions were the focus of the audits and the department officials carrying out these checks were tasked with ensuring all employees are registered for UIF and that all businesses deduct the mandatory contributions.

‘In one case we found a business that was deducting employees’ UIF contributions but failed to pay those contributions to the department as those employees had not been registered for UIF,’ said employer auditor Phumzile Mbatha.

In these instances, the business in question must complete the relevant forms to register all employees for UIF.

The auditors do not leave the premises until these forms are completed.

The business is then liable to pay back-dated UIF contributions as well as interest and penalties.
