Evacuation drill show emergency readiness

Arriving at the scene, firemen quickly jumped into action to demonstrate their capabilities

BUSINESS activity came to a complete halt at the Mtuba Mall on Friday as the uMkhanyakude Disaster Management team and other law enforcement agencies evacuated every nook and cranny of the centre.

Fortunately they were not dealing with a real emergency crisis. It was merely an evacuation drill, conducted twice a year to test the state of readiness of emergency services to deal with a sudden emergency situation.

According to Mtuba Mall General Manager Dylan Niemann, the response time was only seven minutes.

The police, traffic and fire departments, security and EMS crews all participated in the exercise.

‘We are happy that this exercise illustrated that our customers can expect rapid response should a crisis occur,’ Niemann said.
