Municipal corruption allegations persist
Allegations need to be investigated to clear air
THE IFP has called on the MEC of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomsa Dube, to urgently investigate serious claims of corruption raised by workers in Mthonjaneni Municipality.
Examples detailed in a memorandum handed over to the mayor last month include six catering tenders which were awarded last December at R10 000 each. One of these was ‘for dignitaries on World Aids Day’, but no food was served and another was a lavish birthday party, also in December, for the mayor’s daughter.
It is alleged that the Municipal Manager bought a road grader and has stopped presenting Council with complete statements on financial expenditure.
The IFP said it was not’ pronouncing on the veracity of these allegations’, but were concerned that nothing was being done to test them.
This type of corruption comes as no surprise.
I have myself seen the corruption that takes place there but nobody seems to do something about it.
