Richards Bay Port protesters granted bail
Strike action damages estimated at over R1.7-million
THIRTEEN accused facing charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and infrastructure were granted bail of R1 000 each in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
They were arrested last Tuesday during the strike action at Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) where protesters capsized two police vehicles and damaged port property using front-end loaders.
The cost of damages is estimated at R1.4-million for the SAPS vehicles and about R350 000 for the port property where boom gates, water meters and guard rails were destroyed.
Handling company Radds workers embarked on illegal strike action last week after their contracts came to an end, demanding that the port employ them directly.
The matter has been remanded to 30 June.
