Four innovative apps created in South Africa

South Africans have been responsible for many technological advancements over the years

SINCE the advent of the smart phone, polls have shown that people would rather go back home to retrieve their forgotten cellphones than their wallets.

It is thus little wonder that payment apps such as Zapper, FlickPay, SnapScan and GustPay are becoming increasingly popular.

But how many consumers know that these four apps were developed in South Africa?

Local is lekker!

Below are four more apps developed on our shores.

SNAPnSAVE

This cashback-generating app is getting consumers talking.

After all, who isn’t keen to get money back on their grocery bills?

This simple, user-friendly app lets you know beforehand which items are being listed as cashback.

After your grocery shop, simply take a photo of your till receipt in the app and the listed items will earn you cashback.

Some shoppers have boasted of earning as much as R300.

Flapp

This app has been described as the PA’s dream.

With Flapp, last-minute air travel no longer needs to be a nightmare.

Within seconds, you can search for, book and pay for a flight, even if it is taking off within two hours.

Functionality is reportedly easy, the information secure and app users could even enjoy discounts.

Latest sightings

Developed by South African student Nadav Ossendryver, this app was created to enrich people’s wildlife experiences.

Making use of crowd sourcing functioning and social media, this app is used to inform visitors of the latest sightings in game reserves across the country.

While critics have shown concern over the app’s potential to alert poachers to the whereabouts of their prey, Ossendryver said that his now thriving business works closely with SANParks and will continue to do so.

The Latest Sightings app was named as one of the top five most innovative apps within the tourism and culture industry, earning its creator an award last year.

uGoMyWay

This is one for commuters.

This revolutionary app connects drivers who are heading in the same direction, with the aim of easing the burden of traffic and lightening fuel loads.

Through a secure chat function, users can discuss the ride and payment, with payment being made securely via the app.

uGoMyWay has started promoting ‘Carpool Wednesday’ to initiate a carpooling mindset.
