Schools tournament has produced several professional players
UNEARTHING sporting talent and nurturing future soccer stars is close to our hearts, and as long as there are youngsters who see soccer as means to make a living, we are there to assist them reach their dreams.’
That was the message of eSikhawini SuperSpar Public Relations Officer, Gearbox Phakathi, speaking at a schools soccer tournament awards ceremony held last week at Dlamvuzo High School in eSikhaleni.
Phakathi said he was pleased that the tournament has yielded positive results since its inception in 2006.
‘The aim of this tournament is to identify sport talent, particularly soccer. This tournament has attracted schools from eSikhaleni, Dlangezwa and Port Durnford and we are doing this to plough back into the communities we serve.

‘What pleases us most is that this tournament has so far unearthed soccer stars who campaign in the Premier League.
‘We are talking about players such as Jomo Gumede and Sibusiso Msomi, who play for PSL side Platinum Stars, Sandile Gumede who plays for AmaZulu FC and Vusumizi Mbuyazi who plays for Maritzburg United,’ he said.
Dlamvuzo High School emerged as the overall winner and was awarded a soccer jersey and a R5 000 voucher after winning eight of their 10 games and drawing two without conceding a goal.
The runners-up were Ongoye High School and Qhakaza High School finished third.
