Non-payment shock for social grant beneficiaries

‘There are ghost grant beneficiaries - those who receive grant payments even if they are employed’

THE beginning of May started with a shock for many eSikhaleni social grant beneficiaries, who found their bank accounts empty.

After the much publicised Department of Social Development (DSD) grant payments saga which gripped the country in March, with Minister Bathabile Dlamini insisting the grants would be paid at the beginning of April, non-payment has occurred for many.

The cause of the problem is said to be the lack of beneficiaries’ contact details on re-submitted forms.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer, a beneficiary said when he went to the draw money on Wednesday he found there was no money in his account.

‘I have since visited the SASSA offices, but all they tell me is I have to submit my contact details, which I don’t understand because I did so earlier this year.’

When the ZO visited the office on Friday morning, it became evident there was indeed something wrong as unhappy beneficiaries stood in long queues.
