Mtunzini toll rip-off investigated
One Richards Bay resident was twice short-changed by the same toll booth operator at the Mtunzini Toll Plaza

MILLIONS of Rands change hands every year at toll booths around the country, but how many motorists are being short-changed?
After having recently passed through the Mtunzini Toll Plaza en route from Richards Bay to Durban, one motorist noticed he had been short-changed by R1.
‘When I pulled into the lane I greeted the female teller and paid the R41.50 fee with a R50 note,’ said the motorist.
‘I received a whole lot of R1 coins as change but, because I was driving, I passed the change to my son who counted it and noticed it was R1 short.’
Not phased by this seemingly innocent mistake and not concerned about such a small amount, the motorist thought nothing more of the incident – until passing through the same toll plaza when returning to Richards Bay some time later.
‘On our way back, I paid with another R50 note and, to my surprise, was greeted by the same teller,’ said the motorist, who said he does not forget a face.
‘Once again I received my change in R1 coins, but this time decided to count it and it was again R1 short.
‘I questioned the teller about it and, with a huge smile, she said she was sorry and that she had made a mistake.
‘As she had made the same mistake twice with me, I could not help but wonder if it had been intentional.’
This is reportedly not the first such incident at Mtunzini Toll Plaza, with another motorist having been subjected to the same experience a few months ago.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) is investigating the incident and will issue a statement once Intertoll has completed its checks.
