Cruising for crocs and hippos

The trip to St Lucia, and boat cruise on the estuary, formed part of the Phoenix Light Group's annual getaway for about 35 physically challenged Durban residents

A DURBAN-based Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) on Friday brightened the day of more than 35 physically challenged people after arranging a cruise on the St Lucia estuary as part of the group’s annual getaway.

The Phoenix Light Group for the Physically Challenged organises social, recreational and rehabilitation programmes and activities, as well as an annual week away.

‘The aims and objectives of the annual getaway are to encourage living away from home, to give the families a break and, most importantly, to give disabled people joy and an opportunity to enjoy our country,’ said Velli Sagadavan, who arranged the excursion.

Memories were made to last a lifetime

This year’s getaway included two days in St Lucia, during which Advantage Cruiser hosted the group, many of whom are blind, aboard one of its estuary vessels.

Mostly unemployed and dependent on disability grants, those who embarked on this trip would not ordinarily have the luxury of enjoying a boat cruise, and the special concession made for this group meant they got to experience a once-in-a-lifetime activity.

Every member of the group thoroughly enjoyed the hippo and croc estuary cruise, with up close and personal sightings of the estuary’s main attractions, as well as the many bird species resident in the area.

As part of the company’s social commitment, Advantage Cruiser often offers cruises to disadvantaged communities.

In between the fun and games, hippo and croc sightings were enjoyed by the group
