Suspected hijacking boss in the dock

Hijacking accused pleads not guilty on all charges

A YOUNG mother from the J1 section in eSikhaleni who was terrorised in her home and robbed of her vehicle in December last year, testified against the suspected hijacking gang leader at eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court.

Khululiwe Mthembu told the court that on 18 December the accused, Bongani Gumede, and an accomplice entered her house at around 2am and at gunpoint demanded her car keys and other electronic equipment.

‘I was sleeping when my boyfriend woke me up and informed me that there were people in the house. Two men were standing in my lounge, approached us with guns and threatened to kill me if we did not give them what they wanted,’ said the complainant.

Gumede was arrested last year on multiple counts of assault, housebreaking, car hijacking and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

He is believed to be the mastermind behind a string of house robberies and car hijacking in the area.

In a separate case, several female complainants from the area also took to the stand, testifying that Gumede had viciously assaulted them and stole their belongings, including laptops and cell phones.

Gumede pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The case was remanded to 13 November.
