Call for church community to establish co-operatives

Church community should look beyond the word of God in their quest for survival

THE church community should look beyond the word of God in their quest for survival. They must establish community co-operatives which will serve as a vehicle for job creation.

This call was made by veteran development activist, Dr Bhekisisa Mthethwa. Mthethwa, a former district mayor and school principal addressed members of the KwaMbonambi Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa at their Passover Convention held at Dondotha High School.

He said it was impossible to speak about the word of God while neglecting the challenges faced by the poor and how they could be addressed.

‘As ordinary people living in a country like ours, we are faced with high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequalities, and the truth of the matter is that we can’t rely on God to address these challenges for us.

‘I urge you all to start forming co-operatives and register your businesses, to be in a position to alleviate poverty. ‘The sad reality is that the food you are going to enjoy today was not produced by anyone of you.

Next time when you have another service, you must be in a position to make your own uniform as a church. You must also supply yourself with food.

This is the time for you to be innovative and creative,’ Mthethwa said. He said he was willing to assist community members wishing to form co-operative and those who want to start their small businesses through his Siyakhulisa Leadership Project.

‘ We want you to have an understanding of how business works before involving yourselves in it, so as to create sustainable businesses.’
