uMlalazi water pump situation clarified

Municipal manager of King Cetshwayo District, MH Nkosi has responded to the report in Monday’s Zululand Observer regarding failure of the Kwahlokohloko pump

THE municipal manager of King Cetshwayo District, MH Nkosi has responded to the report in Monday’s Zululand Observer regarding failure of the Kwahlokohloko pump.

He says the problem was not a new one, but one that began three weeks before when the pump broke down and this impacted on the volume of water flow to the affected wards.

The new report was intended to update the community on the progress of the repairs. The replacement pump is only available from overseas and an order for a replacement was placed as soon as the pump broke down three weeks ago.

He says that owing to technological advancements, it is impossible to keep a spare pump in stock, as the pump technology changes over time.

‘They are also only built to last a number of years,’ said Nkosi. ‘Contractors are currently on site refurbishing the Rutledge Park pump station and within three weeks the water supply will be back to normal as this station will be able to accommodate all water users who were affected by the breakdown of the Kwahlokohloko pump.’

For the time being residents are being supplied with water through alternate means and most urban consumers are receiving pumped water, albeit at a reduced flow rate.

‘The municipality is at all times committed to service delivery and water supply is our main priority. We regret the inconvenience to residents,’ said Nkosi.
