Zululand athletes make the grade

Scholars run and jump their way to the KZN athletics team

Twenty-two Zululand school athletes have been selected for the KwaZulu-Natal schools team that will represent KZN Athletics at the South African School Championships in Potchefstroom on 23 November.

These young sports men and women competed in five rounds of competition in Durban, and topped their respective events to become selected.

The Zululand squad includes:

Pinkette Phewa (Arboretum Primary School) – 60m and 80m.

Anica du Plessis (Arboretum Primary School) – 1 200m and 70m hurdles.

Shantè Veldsman (Arboretum Primary School) – shot put.

Challen Adonis (Arboretum Primary School) – 70m hurdles.

Mnqobi Ngubane (Felixton College) – high jump, long jump and 100m.

Uminathi Mduli (Grantham Park Primary School) – 60m and 80m.

Michaella Forbes (Grantleigh) – long jump.

Chené van Wyk (Grantleigh) – discus and hammer throw.

Philasande Maxase (Grantleigh) – shot put and long jump.

Chantelle Kriek (Heuwelland Primary School) – high jump.

Nqobani Guma (ILembe) – 1 500m, 1 500m steeple chase and 800m.

Nosiso Sibiya (Mtubatuba Primary) – high jump.

Ngcebo Mndabe (Mtubatuba Primary) – shot put.

Nqubeko Mkhwanazi (Mtubatuba Primary) – 100m, 200m and long jump.

Lize de Beer (Pongola Akademie) – turbo.

Marisca Sutherland (Pongola Akademie) – javelin.

Chris Delport (Pongola Akademie) – javelin.

Karla Combrink (Pongola Akademie)  – triple jump, long jump and 90m hurdles.

Samantha Dreyer (Richards Bay Christian School) – long jump.

Siphesihle Qwabe (Richardsbaai Hoërskool) – 1 500m and 800m.

Retief Ueckermann (Richardsbaai Hoërskool) – discus and hammer throw.

Henk Gouws (Richards Bay Primary School) – high jump.

  2. Shocked with selection procedure
    Since when do you get selected to the team for coming 5 th and not 3rd!?
    Having a bronze medal in the 100 m and attending the compulsory meetings means no KZN colours and yet these were the rules published by KZN athletics on their web site! KZN athletics need to get their house in order!
