Local film producers strike SAFTA gold

Richards Bay-based producers André and Nicole Meyer won for Best Achievement in Cinematography

DOC-U-MENTALLY, a locally produced film portraying the gruelling 30-hour shifts of junior doctors at the Ngwelezana and Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional hospitals, scooped the SAFTA award for Best Achievement in Cinematography.
Richards Bay-based producers André and Nicole Meyer of Meyer Productions accepted the sterling accolade at the 11th annual ceremony, held at Sun City last week.
Still in seventh heaven, André on Wednesday said the announcement bowled them over.
‘We were really surprised that we won because we were up against two incredible documentaries in the same category – Alison and Nobody’s Died Laughing.
‘We were just really happy to be nominated, but winning was great!
‘The overall experience of attending the SAFTAs (South African Film and Television Awards) was amazing.’
The film received raving reviews since released last year for giving the public an eye-opening glimpse into the arduous world of work for the 5 000 junior doctors working at government hospitals.
It also won Best SA Documentary at the Jozi Film Festival last year.
