Zululander’s scarf ‘poached’ by Princess Charlene of Monaco

Bronwen Sarson came to the aid of Princess Charlene at the Special Olympics

SPECIAL encounters with people of royalty are few and far between for most Zululanders.
But former KwaMbonambi resident Bronwen Sarson recently came to the aid of Princess Charlene of Monaco.
Currently living in Graz, Austria, with her husband and two daughters, Sarson had a somewhat unique experience in the sense that Princess Charlene wore her South African scarf during the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics, which took place at the Schladming ski resort in Austria.
Bronwen said that when she heard that South Africa was sending a team to the Special Olympics in Graz, she immediately made contact with Ancilla Smith, the CEO of Special Olympics South Africa.
‘We arranged to meet at one of the floor hockey matches last Fiday.
‘My daughters and I made South African flags and I wore my South African flag scarf. I have always been deeply patriotic.
Then came the unexpected request.
‘Ancilla shared with me that she had a problem. Princess Charlene, who is also a Special Olympics Ambassador, would be walking with Team SA as a honorary guest at the opening ceremony the following day.
‘She needed something in the South African colours to wear and Ancilla hadn’t brought any extra gear because of luggage restrictions on the flight.
‘She asked if she could use my scarf.’
Feeling immensely proud and honoured, Bronwen said yes without hesitation.
‘It was with great excitement that we watched the opening ceremony.
‘Princess Charlene first walked with the team from Monaco and then went back to walk with the South African team, this time wearing my SA flag scarf.’
